Fun For The Whole Family - The Best But Also Most Violent Children's Books. Philip is a young nobleman who was born in Outremer, descendant of a Norman knight who rode with the First Crusade.

Philip befriends a Turk, Jusuf, whom he rescues from robbers, and later impresses the king by his superior swordsmanship in a duel, gaining his knighthood.

If you want boys to grow up enjoying history and understanding the importance of knowing about their and others' history then this book is where you start.

The 1950s era writing shows, but I really enjoyed it all the same.

Not completely convincing - having been captured by the Assassins and then released and sent on their way, Philip and his friend Gilbert arrive at Krak des Chevaliers and their story of being lost in the desert is instantly accepted - but they were clean, well-fed, rested and bathed whilst with the assassins, so I am sure they did not actually look as if they had been lost in the de. June 1979 So refreshing to read a book in which so far there are absolutely no female characters - no mothers, sisters, maidservants - just the thing for adolescent boys.

This title is historical fiction and based on historical documentation and accounts.

Worthy children's writing prize winner - wouldn't even get a nomination today. The dated portrait of Richard the Lionheart does not diminish it's readability even now.

Better than I expected!
