Based around the stories of several main characters working in a hair salon, a bar and amusement arcades in the seaside resort of Scarborough it has similarities to Benidorm, but the humour is somewhat different.
I’m always open to giving a writer a second shot though so thought I’d check out his latest effort, a BBC1 comedy that rather being set in sunny Spain is in the distinctly British seaside town and slightly less appealing Scarborough. The dialogue is clever, funny and more than anything it cheers you up.

I was expecting the laughs and style of Benidorm but I have found it to be quite unfunny so far. When Scarborough was announced, it seemed to have a lot in common with creator Derren Litten’s long-running hit Benidorm, being set in a seaside resort town with a cast of working-class characters united by a love of karaoke.
A working-class woman who runs an old-fashioned café in a neglected seaside town develops a strong, if sometimes volatile, friendship with an asylum-seeking African doctor. With Jessica Barden, Jordan Bolger, Edward Hogg, Jodhi May. A down to earth great British comedy.
Just watched this on catch-up, it took a couple of episodes to get into it, but by the end I loved it. Mike and his boss interview for a new member of staff at the arcade.

The drone scenes of Scarborough look beautiful.

In many ways it’s quite similar to Benidorm though as it features a selection of very English characters who moan away about their lives, Stephanie Cole’s Marion could especially have walked off of the set of Benidorm and on to this, as she complain about gay men being on tv and tells an anecdote to her daughter about how a cat wandered in to a neighbour’s house and shat on his mincemeat. In the same way that ‘Only Fools and Horses’ managed to mix emotion with comedy, Scarborough does exactly the same, it doesn’t take long to feel like you know the characters and that is down to the brilliant writing talent that is Derren Litten. Two couples - each comprising a teacher and a student - spend a life-changing weekend at the seaside resort town of Scarborough. Could be the new Benidorm ( Scarbados). Darren Litten shows us that he is not a one trick pony with Scarborough. This is a wonderful series full of well-drawn and fresh characters set in a small-size situation. Steve Edge as Mike’s rent-dodging flatmate Bigbsy – an insensitive but apparently well-meaning idiot exaggerating his shady past – is a good comic sidekick, too, though him quoting Jimmy Savile comes as something of a surprise. Reviews have been mixed but in my view, it is a huge thumbs up in every department. I am a local and I wanted this to be good, but falls well short of the mark for me. Good old fashioned comedy with great stars. I really hope more can be made. The casting is brilliant, the scripts are excellent, the cross over between comedy and drama is second to none. I presumed it was building up to a big pay off, an incredibly funny set piece of some kind, but it doesn’t do that at all.
