Of course you can’t see all of Switzerland in a week, but with the help of the country’s smooth highways and speedy rail connections, you can introduce yourself to its “greatest hits.” One week provides just enough time to visit the cultural hubs of Zurich, Lucerne, Bern, Lausanne, and Geneva, and to take in a few splendid mountain views. A little walk away is one of Lucerne’s more popular parks with the Lion monument and the nearby Gletschergarten. (as well as other mountain passes). You can choose to do only one, and take it a little more easy (or do some more walking) or, you can squeeze in two if you really want to cram in the highlights. However, if you want some stunning views on the way then take the scenic route via Brunnen and Vitznau along the shores of Lake Lucerne. The town enjoyed a great heyday under the Romans; more recently, it’s been a favorite of expats and a choice watering hole for literati—everybody from Dickens to Thackeray; T. S. Eliot even wrote The Wasteland here. Our blend of guides which included Holly, our Kiwi connection, Jean Marc, our French guide, and Boi, our Catalonian driver and food gatherer extraordinaire were fun, extremely knowledgeable, and very committed to the enjoyment of our trip. The Eiger’s north face is infamous for being one of the hardest climbs in the Alps and has killed more people than I care to name. In the afternoon, have a leisurely walk along Limmatquai, Zurich’s finest waterside promenade. Oops, you There are a few noteworthy things about this trip: To get here you have to take a boat to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock and then the cog railway to the top. On the first day, you should soak up the sights in Lucerne, of which there are plenty. Or just leave luggage in the hotel.
Lucerne is probably the most visited Swiss city. That night, dine at Opfelchammer, or, if you forgot to reserve a table there, at the Zeughauskeller, a formal arsenal dating from 1487. Day 4-5, Bern: The capital city of Switzerland is filled with historic sites, from museums to cathedrals. Blue alpine lakes. My next favorite destination is another classic Lucerne day trip – a boat trip and cog railway trip up to (almost) the summit of Mount Rigi (1798m / 5899 ft).
